4. How to Tell When a Tip Is Worn
Worn tips cost you more in paint, time, and finish quality. Know the signs:
Tip Wear Indicators
Good — Replace At Correct Interval
Even fan pattern from edge to edge. Consistent oval spray shape. Pressure at normal dial setting for the material. Orifice appears round when you look straight through it.
Warning — Replace Soon
Tails developing at edges of spray pattern (heavy on each side, thin in the middle). Need to increase pressure to maintain output. Orifice begins to look slightly oval.
Worn Out — Replace Now
Clearly oval or teardrop-shaped orifice. Significant tailing on spray pattern. Using noticeably more paint than usual for same coverage. Pressure dial cranked to maximum for what should be a lighter material.
Rule of thumb: A tip is ready to replace when the orifice has worn approximately 25% larger than its original size. A 0.015" tip worn to 0.019" is effectively a 019 tip — the fan narrows and output spikes. You'll use up to 40% more paint before noticing and wonder why your job cost more than expected.
5. What Does RAC X Mean?
RAC stands for Reverse-A-Clean — the key feature that makes Graco tips the industry standard for professionals. When the tip clogs, you simply:
Rotate the RAC X tip guard 180 degrees
Trigger the gun briefly — the reversed tip shoots the clog backwards out of the orifice
Rotate back to spray position and continue
The X designates the current generation, which features a harder carbide insert for longer orifice life compared to the older RAC 5 series. The RAC X guard is also compatible with older RAC 5 tips.

RAC X tips fit any airless spray gun with a standard 7/8-inch tip nut — which covers most Graco, Titan, and Wagner guns. The RAC X tip guard is also backward-compatible with Graco RAC 5 tips, though RAC 5 tip guards will not accept RAC X tips.
Pro tip: A worn spray tip looks exactly like a pressure problem. Before you tear into your pump, flip the tip 180° and test spray. If the pattern improves, it's the tip — not the pump.
