The 190ES ran across two completely different displacement pumps. Early machines, models 232900 and 232901, use pump 243187. Later 190ES Plus and 190ES Stand machines use pump 255198, which is also the pump in the 190LTS and the 210ES. They are not interchangeable. Check the model number on the machine label before ordering anything in the fluid section.
The 190ES is one of the most common machines still in daily service, which means it is also one of the most commonly mis-ordered. The reason is simple and nobody warns you about it: Graco fitted two different pump platforms to machines wearing the same 190ES badge.
Get that one decision right and everything else on this machine is straightforward. Get it wrong and you have a pump that will not fit, a return to arrange, and a job waiting.
1. Which 190ES Do You Have
Find the model number on the machine label. Not the name, not the serial alone, the model number.
243187
Models 232900 · 232901The earlier platform. Documented at 3,000 PSI maximum working pressure.
- Drive housing 243220
- Connecting rod 243221
- Crank shaft 243218
- Combination gear 243219
- Motor shroud 243217
- Stand mount frame 241858
255198
190ES Plus 255712 · 255713 · Stand 255847 · 255848The later platform. Shared with the 190LTS and the 210ES.
- Drive housing 255168
- Connecting rod 287053
- Retaining spring 196750
- Straight pin 196762
- Front cover 15E630
- Hi cart frame 288216
If you cannot read the model label, the drive housing part number will tell you which platform you have. 243220 means the early 243187 machine. 255168 means the later 255198 machine. The connecting rod differs too, 243221 against 287053. If you have the machine open anyway, read those numbers rather than guessing from the badge.
2. 243187 Pump: Full Callout Reference
Internal components of the 243187 displacement pump, with callout numbers from the factory parts manual.
| Ref | Component | Part | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 101 | Displacement rod | 243179 | Inspect for scoring before rebuilding |
| 102 | Plug | 180656 | |
| 103 | Packing nut | 193047 | Adjustable for throat wear |
| 104 | Pump manifold | 243180 | |
| 105 | Jam nut | 187614 | 1-3/8-18 unef-2b |
| 106 | Female throat gland | 176757 | In repair kit |
| 107 | V-packing | 176997 | Quantity 3. In repair kit |
| 118 | Packing O-ring | 108526 | In repair kit |
| 119 | Pump cylinder | 235708 | Inspect bore before rebuilding |
| 120 | Inlet valve | 224966 | |
| 121 | Inlet ball, 1/2 in | 105445 | In repair kit |
| 122 | Packing O-ring | 111603 | In repair kit |
Note callout 106: the 176757 female throat gland is the same part covered in our O-rings, seals and packing kits guide, where it lists at $8.69. It appears across several Graco fluid sections, which makes it one of the more useful individual seals to keep on hand.
3. 255198 Pump and Later Frame
The later platform changed more than the pump. Frame, handle and drive assembly all differ.
| Ref | Component | Part |
|---|---|---|
| 33 | Displacement pump | 255198 |
| 29 | Drive housing | 255168 |
| 30 | Connecting rod | 287053 |
| 30a | Retaining spring | 196750 |
| 31 | Straight pin | 196762 |
| 32 | Front cover | 15E630 |
| 1 | Hi cart frame | 288216 |
| 2 | Cart handle | 245245 |
| 6 | Cart sleeve | 192027 |
| 7 | Spring straight pin | 108068 |
| 8 | Snap button | 179777 |
Because the 255198 spans the 190ES Plus, 190ES Stand, 190LTS and 210ES, it is one of the more useful pumps to understand if you run more than one machine. A shop with a 190ES Plus and a 210ES is servicing the same fluid section twice, which means one set of spare seals covers both. Our 210ES reference covers what else those two machines share and where they diverge.
4. Motor, Drive and Control
Early platform components, from the factory parts list.
| Ref | Component | Part | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Motor, 120 VAC | 245893 | Models 232900 D, 232901 C |
| 1 | Motor, 120 VAC | 249610 | Models 232900 E, 232901 D |
| 2 | Fan motor blade | 115525 | |
| 3 | Combination gear | 243219 | |
| 7 | Crank shaft | 243218 | |
| 9 | Connecting rod | 243221 | Includes 9a, 9b |
| 9a | Pump pin | 195175 | |
| 9b | Pin retainer | 195512 | |
| 10 | Drive housing | 243220 | |
| 12 | Pump jam nut | 195150 | |
| 74 | Motor shroud | 243217 | |
| 75 | Side vent | 195503 |
Motor 245893 and motor 249610 fit the same model numbers at different series letters. The series letter is part of the model designation on the label, for example "232900, D" rather than just "232900". If you are ordering a motor, read the full designation including that letter.
5. Filtration: The Three Points
Most 190ES complaints that get described as pump problems are filtration problems. There are three places debris gets caught, and all three are cheap.
| Ref | Component | Part | What it protects |
|---|---|---|---|
| 82 | Strainer kit | 235004 | Everything downstream of the bucket |
| 81 | Filter insert | 15E288 | Manifold, catches what the strainer misses |
| — | Gun filter, 100 mesh | 287032 | The tip, last line of defence |
| 78 | Flexible suction hose | 244354 | Cracks here cause air ingress |
| 84 | Drain hose | 243198 | Includes 81, 85, 86, 87 |
| 85 | Threaded deflector | 241920 |

6. Symptom Diagnosis
Will not prime
The pump cycles but paint does not reach the gun, or prime is lost after a pause.
Check in order: Strainer kit 235004 clogged → flexible suction hose 244354 cracked or loose, which lets it draw air → inlet ball 105445 and inlet valve 224966. The first two cost almost nothing to check.
Pressure drops under load
Holds pressure at startup, falls off during sustained spraying.
Check in order: Gun filter 287032 → manifold filter insert 15E288 → tip oversized for the machine → throat packings. A 190ES is a mid-tier machine, so a tip above its rating will produce exactly this symptom.
Fluid weeping at the packing nut
Paint appearing where the displacement rod enters the pump.
Cause: Worn throat packings. First try: a quarter turn on packing nut 193047. If that holds for less than a day, the packings are worn out rather than loose and need replacing. Do not keep tightening, it scores the rod.
Motor runs, pump does not move
Audible motor, no stroke, no pressure.
Cause: Drive side. Connecting rod, pump pin 195175, or pin retainer 195512. Do not open the fluid section for this symptom, the pump is not the problem.
Motor will not start or cuts out
No response, or runs then stops under load.
Check: Power supply and extension cord gauge first, since undersized cords are a common cause on these machines. Then: motor, matched to your model AND series letter (245893 or 249610).
7. Rebuild or Replace the Pump
On a 190ES the rebuild case is usually strong, because the pump is a meaningful share of the machine's value and the repair is straightforward.
The deciding factor is the same as on any airless pump: the condition of the hard parts. New packings seal against the displacement rod and the cylinder bore. If either surface is damaged, a repair kit will fail almost immediately.
- Run a fingernail along displacement rod 243179. It should feel glass smooth. Any groove you can catch means the rod needs replacing, not resealing.
- Inspect cylinder 235708 in good light. Vertical scoring, pitting or a visible step where the piston travels all disqualify a reseal.
- Check for corrosion if the machine was stored wet or stored with water based material in it. Pitting behaves like scoring.
If both surfaces are clean, a pump repair kit such as 235474 restores the packings, O-rings and seals for a fraction of a complete pump. If either is damaged, order the pump. Fitting a kit to a scored pump wastes the kit and the afternoon.
If you are looking at a pump, a motor and a drive housing on the same machine, add them up against the cost of a current equivalent sprayer before committing. The 190ES is a solid machine and worth rebuilding once or twice, but there is a point where three major assemblies at once means the machine has reached the end rather than needing a repair. We would rather tell you that than sell you all three.

Which displacement pump does a Graco 190ES use?
It depends on the model. Early 190ES sprayers, models 232900 and 232901, use displacement pump 243187. Later 190ES Plus and 190ES Stand models use pump 255198. The two are not interchangeable, so check the model number on the machine label before ordering any fluid section part.
What is the difference between the 243187 and 255198 pumps?
They are different pump platforms fitted to different production runs of the 190ES. The 243187 is the earlier unit, documented at 3,000 PSI maximum working pressure. The 255198 is the later unit used across the 190ES Plus, 190ES Stand and 190LTS, and it is also the pump used in the 210ES.
Do the Graco 190ES and 210ES share parts?
They share the 255198 displacement pump, which is why it is catalogued as a pump repair kit for 190 and 210ES machines. Frames, motors and some control components differ between the two. Verify any part outside the fluid section against your own model number rather than assuming full interchangeability.
What wears out first on a Graco 190ES?
The spray tip, then the inlet strainer and gun filter, then the throat packings inside the displacement pump. A 190ES that will not prime is usually a clogged strainer or a worn inlet ball and seat rather than a failed pump. Check filtration before opening the fluid section.
Can I rebuild a 190ES pump instead of replacing it?
Yes, provided the displacement rod and cylinder bore are undamaged. A pump repair kit replaces the packings, O-rings and seals for a fraction of the cost of a complete pump. If the rod is scored or the cylinder is worn, new seals have nothing to seal against and the repair will fail quickly.
